PUNAHOU BLUES

5.0 out of 5 starsAnother superb read by a gifted author

This is the second book I’ve read by Kirby Michael Wright. I am deep into his third book but nobody writes about the Hawaiian island of Molokai like Kirby. He is such a talented author you feel like you are with him through his difficult childhood on the island of Oahu and his years at the prestigious Punahou school. The characters are so real you feel you know them. I particularly enjoyed Steve, the drug taker and dealer. The scenes where he and Kirby are growing pakalolo on Kirby’s roof at home are priceless. The fact that his mom knew and only warned him to remove them “before you know who gets home” made me like this complex woman so much more. One chapter is riveting, where he boxes another kid at school. Superbly written. As a former boxing writer, it all rang true to me. Every vicious punch. For me, the scenes where he spends summers on Molokai with his brother at their grandma’s house are like little gems scattered in the sunshine. A delicious read and a delightful dose of aloha. As gritty and tough as Kirby’s legendary grandma Brownie was, she had a heart as big as an ocean. A gem sometimes needing to be dug from Molokai’s rich soil. A beautiful, beautiful book.
